Material Woman: The Power of the Feminine Hand // On View January 24 - March 14, 2020
Material Woman looks at the possibilities and transformations of the essence of materials by ten artists. Shaping by the hand is ever present in weaving, sewing, bending, cutting, typing, forming - creating new life from inanimate matter.
The artists in Material Woman share an interest in exploration and transformation of everyday materials, some historically associated with feminine hands and some newly provocative and gender free. Each of the artists represented here is an alchemist who transforms the substances of daily life into something other and mysterious.
The artists are caught between the tensions of materiality and rebirth. They instill life into and out of inanimate objects. Historically this was often done in community, in a circle of women. Healing flows within those circles – into each other, our families and our communities at large. This show celebrates the power of the feminine hand to all of our lives.
Pharaoh & Shadow by Karin Birch
11x14in framed — $2,500.00
Hand embroidery, beadwork and acrylic paint on linen
I have been using hand embroidery and hand stitched beadwork combined with acrylic paint as a medium for Art making for twenty some years. The act of hand stitching thread and beads is a slow and repetitive process that affords the space for uninterrupted thought. The act of painting is spontaneous, in the moment, physical movement. Combining these two opposite states gives form to endless exploration in to the mystery of being. I work intuitively, mining personal experiences, energy, movement, nature and the occasional external interruptions of politics. I use this medium of minutiae as a practice for connecting with the vastness.
