Lophophora

Lophophora is an homage to the land in the southwest and all that the land produces and provides. Although the land is known to be dry and desolate there are many plants that thrive in the environment, bringing water, medicine, and nutrients to the people.

The thought that land has memory and records all that took place there, often guides my research and my work. My work often investigates my family history in northeastern New Mexico. The concept of home, memory, time and place are a common thread throughout my practice. In making Lophophora I thought about the feelings I associate with being in New Mexico’s desolate landscape, the smell of the air, the sound of the red dirt crunching beneath your feet, and the sound of the wind.
