Throughout this year of pandemic, like all of us, I have had to deal with the physical restrictions that quarantine and social distancing have imposed. But even before COVID, personal experiences of loss and transition had me thinking about the limitations of the physical body and the liberation that comes with its transfiguration into immaterial spirit. COVID, a negation of the body in so many ways, magnified these feelings and made the expression of the persistence of spirit feel even more compelling It is with these thoughts in mind that I’ve created this vessel. In a happy coincidence, I have actually been working with pure silver leaf as a surfacing material for a while now. Silver is indeed an important alchemical element but I am drawn to it more for its visual fluidity. The silver leaf on my vessel is unsealed and will develop a beautiful warm patina as it ages.
