Rose Medallion
Acrylic paint and metallic calligraphy ink
Inspired by the traditional rose medallion collectable bowls and plates I recently received from a passing family member, this bowl is divided into four sections or "scenes". The rose color is a menstrual red that is predominant in my practice speaking to the natural currents of wom(b)an as vessel. Red is also a color associated with the lower chakras, specifically to the root chakra often called upon for grounding and security. Blue is representative of the sky -its universal time and space- as well as to the throat chakra, associated with speaking one's truth. The painted patterns are of a repetitive symbol I use in my work to demonstrate the meditative purposes and lessons of repetition, most recently explored during my ARTidotes Artist Residency at the Hisaoka Gallery in January 2021. Thus this vessel is truly alchemical in its energetic symbolism, color theory, visual formulas, and cyclical essence.
